Puppy flashback III : Sleeping places

I iz tired so I sleep anywhere I wantz, got a problem with that? this iz my place after all.

Chloe sleeps anywhere she likes, be it the cold floor, the carpet, on the sofa, on my bed, even on top of me! She totally ignores her dog bed, well, as long as she is comfortable, thats's fine with me.

I find these old pictures of little puppy Chloe really cute looking. To look more fasccinating as it is, I tweaked the photos a little with a polaroid image make Poladroid. The application is free so it's worth a try, the photos came out decent though, what do you think?

Crating Chloe

Who sez I can't be crated?

I had a previous post which mentioned that I would be giving up confining Chloe inside her pen and crate. I was afraid that she might hurt herself because she always throws a fit when confined inside her pen or crate trying to go out.

Now that she's matured a lot since she was a little puppy, I decided retraining her to be on the crate. So here are some methods I utilized:

  • I use the crate for her everyday needs, water bottle is there, that's where the bowl of food is and that is the place where she eats her meals.

  • For my method training, I use treats and clicker training to reinforce positive and desirable behavior.

  • I play crate games with her, first I throw a treat inside the crate, praise her or click when she steps inside the crate, and give more treats as she steps all the way in, I don't close the crate just yet because she will still try to get out, I just kept on repeating this until she realized that the crate is a safe and fun place to be in, and that there is always treats inside.

  • Second step, I stand next to the crate and wait for her to go inside it, when she goes, I praise, click and give her treats. I don't give treats when she's still outside. I kept repeating this and eventually she went inside the crate on her own and waiting for me to give her something.

  • Lastly, when I'm doing something like watching television and sit on the couch, She goes inside the crate on her own. This time, I close and lock it with her inside, and I constantly toss her some treats from time to time while she's inside. We do this at least once a day for her to be used to it.

  • Remember, positive reinforcements is still the best way to train. I think that nothing good will result from negative reinforcement, it still might cause problems for you later on.

And the results for our hard work? decreased fussing and whining on crate time and maybe..............

Sleeping inside the crate!

Puppy Flashback II : First Tricks

Part two of the puppy flashbacks, this was Chloe at 13 weeks (3 months and a week). I managed to teach her three obedience tricks, come, sit and down at this time. I myself find it awesome that she was able to learn these tricks. Shibas are not that difficult to train because of their high intelligence, and to top it off, Chloe is highly motivated by the treats and praise that she receives when she does what I want her to do.

I needed to repeat the commands here before she follows me. I learned later on that you only have to say the command once and let her think what you want her to do, especially when she knows the commands already.  I'm somehow proud of myself because this is the first time I've managed to teach a dog how to do stuff, and it's quite impressive of how intelligent they can be. Remember that teaching dogs or any other creature, even human beings requires a lot of work, patience, practice and motivation to be able to succeed.

Puppy Flashback I

This was Chloe when she first came to my home. She still looks the same at present but much bigger. It's fascinating that her face didn't really change that much now that she's grown. And I like it how she gives that kind of a look on her face that she's up to no good, again.

Suumer Reminders

The flyers said it all. Even if its already the end of summer or not even summer in some places, the extreme heat we are experiencing right now pushed me to write this post. A lot of people leave dogs inside their cars along with this dying heat, and temperatures inside the car can be very extreme when left under the sun. It's even comparable to an oven. If it's hot for us humans, what more for the dogs with those thick fur of theirs?

There was this one afternoon and it was still scorching hot and I was driving home from work when I saw a pickup truck, with a dalmatian dog tied up on the back of the vehicle under the heat of the sun and was panting very hard. Seriously, they could have just let the dog ride inside where there's a lot of space for the poor one.

I came across these flyers which is a project of a Shiba blogger in order to increase awareness regarding this topic and to raise funds for Saving Shibas, a shiba rescue group. You can purchase these flyers on etsy at a reasonable price. I'l be getting some too, carry it around and leave it on cars who leave their dogs inside their cars or distribute it to people who you knew have dogs. These may help educate dog owners to become a more responsible pet owner.

A friend of mine have been giving some stuffed toys that's been lying on storage for a while and I thought of my furkids, they'll surely love these stuff.

Which will they pounce on first? the little lion, the spider, the big fish, the tiny bear, pink bear, orange monkey, the tiger, little donkey???

And the winner for Chloe is the little lion!

Maru chose the Giraffe bigger than him.

These two needs to learn to share stuff with each other. Why fight for one toy? There's still a lot in the crate!

Since big sister won't share me her toys, better hog all of it now!

These are 'stuffed' toys, so in some point, I know that they're going rip the stuffing out of it. More cleaning for me and I guess I'll just have to keep up with it. Well, at least it's more fun for for them.

The little lion's hair and eyes are getting ripped out by Chloe at this moment, Great.

To Hunt a Mocking Bird

This goes to show how the Shiba's prey drive is really strong. My girl is ready to  run away to hunt the bird, if only she isn't restrained by her leash. And yeah, Chloe really love birds, she gets easily distracted by them.

Hey you bird, no fair! One day I'll get you! I am a Shiba you know.

Updates on Maru

It feels like ages since I've posted something. It's been quite busy the past few days. Maru completed his medication regimen and have his stool checked again a week later. All traces of worms, eggs, and giardias are all gone. Now he is a happy and parasite free puppy.

Some photos of Maru while we take a walk:

Stubborn pup won't look at the camera.

Would you mind cooperating for a bit?

Now he doesn't wanna move while on leash, great.

Cooling off at the beach

Are those dogs in there? What are we waiting for? Let's get 'em.

It was two weeks ago when we went to our third Shiba Inu meet up which was held on a dog beach and conveniently near my place. This was the first time that we're going to a dog beach, and it would be interesting how Chloe will handle big bodies of water seeing how she hates taking a bath.

Beach photos with her 'airplane ears'

It's not very noticeable because she's facing me, but the first photo shows her airplane ears with smiles. Chloe is enjoying our trip because she doesn't smile that often. She often have that fierce look on her face like she's up to no good.

It's a shiba meet up, so we met some shibas again that day, including Winnie from A Winnie Day whose humom being responsible for organizing the meet up. Some interesting Shibas showed up too whose names i didn't remember again including the black and tan shiba with a red head.

It's Yumi from INU+NYANKOS. She's owned by Aya, one of the the readers of this blog. I wish Chloe dug something at the beach like Yumi did.

I love how big those shiba tails are. Wait, that cream shiba and Chloe have the same collar!

Laying down with the humans, it was nice of them to share some water to Chloe.

*Yawn* I'm tired, let's go home already.

So, how did Chloe took the beach? She was really afraid of the waves at first, like all the shibas around. She needed some forcing to get to the water, I think she enjoyed the water when she got used to it, but that's as far as she goes. It would be kind of interesting if she could swim though.
